Hollywood celebs, chart-topping artists and DJs, prominent comedians, and even an Olympic gold medalist will be among the cast members of everyone’s favourite baking program, which will return with a truly star-studded lineup. This year’s Bake Off celebrity competition will include a big group of 20 celebrities, who will compete over the course of five weeks this spring, with four bakers stepping up to the kitchen counter each week.
Fans of The Great British Bake Off celebrity Netflix show and charming British celebrities in the United States will be happy to hear both good and bad news. The good news is that James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Katherine Ryan will compete in a reduced version of the renowned baking competition to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer in this year’s star-studded charity edition of the series, the annual Great Celebrity Bake Off. The bad news is that it’s bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, awful, bad, bad, bad, and poor. The terrible, horrible, no good, very bad news is that not only will The Great Celebrity Bake Off not be added to Netflix, but it also won’t be streamable anywhere else outside of the U.K.
It’s a truly devastating turn of events for any non-U.K. resident who wanted nothing more than to watch Mr. Tumnus construct a legitimately impressive cake in the shape of a snow leopard. (Guilty!) What is the Great Celebrity Bake Off?
The celebrity bake-off The 2019 Show has partnered with Stand Up to Cancer for the past four years to produce a celebrity version of the long-running baking series to generate money for the charity. Each season has five episodes, each with a different set of four renowned Brits competing. Aisling Bea, John Lithgow, Russell Brand, James Blunt, and Tan France have all competed in the past.
The Great Celebrity Bake Off online show follows the standard structure of the Baking Show, with three challenges—a signature, technical, and showstopper—followed by the crowning of a star baker from among the amateur bakers. The judges and hosts are the same as on the original show; this year, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are judging, and Matt Lucas is hosting alone because Noel Fielding was on paternity leave at the time of production.

Celebrity Baking Contest 2021 Baking competitions, such as the one shown above for making Victoria sponge, are a part of the traditional English village fete that inspired the series. Producer Anna Beattie came up with the idea for the baking competition after conversing with a friend who had seen “bake-offs” in America. “I loved the idea of village fetes and an old-fashioned baking competition with people who were just trying to make a good cake,” Beattie said of the traditional English village fête baking competitions. Beattie, on the other hand, was unable to arouse the interest of any channel in the proposal for four years.
In early 2009, they pitched the idea to Janice Hadlow, then-controller of BBC Two. The proposal from Hadlow and Commissioning Editor Charlotte Moore was approved, and the show was commissioned and produced over the next six months. The creative team first chose Mary Berry as a judge, and then, after an audition, Paul Hollywood was added.
Production
The series is shot in bunting-draped marquees in gorgeous gardens, emulating the atmosphere of an English village fête. The filming locations changed in the first series, but from the second series onward, only one location was used for each season. With the exception of Series 11, when the COVID-19 outbreak cut production down to six weeks, the show is usually filmed over a period of 12 to 13 weeks, usually on weekends.
Amateur bakers who apply to be on the 2019 Celebrity Bake Off show are first evaluated by a researcher, followed by a London audition with two of their baked goods. They next go through a screen test and a producer interview. In a second audition, the candidates must bake two recipes in front of the judges and the cameras. Between 10 and 13 individuals are chosen for the programme after a psychological evaluation.
Changes in the broadcast and personnel
The first episode of The Great British Bake Off: Celebrity Edition on Netflix aired on BBC Two on August 17, 2010. It aired on BBC Two for four years, growing in popularity to become the channel’s most popular show. It was relocated to BBC One in its fifth season, where it stayed for three years. In 2015 and 2016, it was the most-watched show on British television.
Following lengthy negotiations, Love Productions announced that the seventh series of the show will be the show’s final BBC airing. Love and Channel 4 signed a three-year agreement to air the show on September 12, 2016. The global distribution rights to the show, which are expected to be renewed in 2028, are still owned by BBC Studios. When the show was moved to a new network, Giedroyc and Perkins declared that they would not be returning.
